What “Research Use Only” (RUO) means for buyers
Updated: October 8, 2026
RUO (Research Use Only) means a material is supplied for laboratory research and not for diagnosis, therapy, consumption or use in people or animals.
What it implies
- They are not medicines, food supplements, foods or cosmetics.
- They have not been evaluated by any health authority for use in people or animals.
- The supplier provides no doses, protocols or indications.
- The buyer is an adult, acts as a researcher and complies with the rules of their country.
Why consistency matters
European pharmaceutical law considers how a product is presented and not only what it contains. A “research only” line loses its value if the rest of the content suggests human use. That is why a serious RUO site limits its information to chemical, analytical and laboratory handling data.
What documentation to expect from an RUO supplier
- Chemical identification of the material (name, sequence or structure, mass).
- Laboratory analytical reports, with batch and method.
- Storage and handling conditions.
- Supplier identity, contact details and returns policy.
